Chattahoochee National Forest Forest Road 42 Cooper Creek Scenic Backcountry
CCC camps and gold rush ghosts in the mountains
Forest Road 42 traces the original route of Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps camps through the Chattahoochee’s most remote valleys. The gravel track follows Cooper Creek downstream past hand-built stone bridges and overgrown foundations where young men carved roads through virgin timber. Historic Dockery Lake marks the halfway point, where gold prospectors once panned the headwaters and left behind rusted equipment still visible in the creek beds.
This moderate route requires high-clearance but rewards careful drivers with excellent dispersed camping and reliable creek water. Spring brings wildflowers and active waterfalls, while fall offers crisp mountain air and fewer visitors. No permits required, but the road can wash out during heavy rains — check conditions at the Dahlonega ranger station. It’s proper mountain country without the crowds, perfect for a long weekend of exploring Georgia’s mining heritage.
