Quabbin Reservoir Gate 35 Loop

Gate 35 opens into the heart of Quabbin’s lost civilization — flooded towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott that were sacrificed for Boston’s water supply in the 1930s. This gravel road system winds past stone foundations and cemetery markers that survived the flooding, threading through second-growth forest that’s reclaimed what was once farmland. The main loop follows old town roads and maintenance tracks, passing the Winsor Dam spillway and offering glimpses of the reservoir through dense hardwood forest.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles for rocky sections and seasonal mud holes, though most stock SUVs handle it fine. Gates close at sunset and require DCR permits for some sections. Best tackled April through November when gates are reliably open. Bring water and snacks — no services exist within the reservation boundaries. What you get is rare solitude in Massachusetts’ largest protected wilderness, plus the haunting reminder of entire communities sacrificed for progress.
