Green Mountain National Forest Somerset Reservoir Dispersed Area
This dispersed camping area spreads along the forest roads near Somerset Reservoir in southern Vermont’s Green Mountains. Sites are scattered in the mixed hardwood forest at around 2,100 feet elevation, offering cooler temperatures in summer and spectacular fall colors. Most spots can handle medium-sized rigs, with several fire rings already established by previous campers. The nearby reservoir provides excellent brook trout fishing and the area serves as a gateway to numerous hiking trails.
Access is via Forest Road 71, which starts paved but transitions to well-maintained gravel. The area can get busy during peak foliage season in early October, but stays relatively quiet otherwise. Water must be carried in or filtered from the reservoir. Some sites require short walks from the parking areas.
