Vermont Route 100 Honey Hollow Road
Green Mountain sugar bush backcountry climb
Honey Hollow Road splits off Route 100 just south of Manchester and immediately starts climbing toward the Green Mountain ridgeline through working sugar bush operations that have run maple syrup for over a century. The road turns nasty after the last farm gate, with loose rock ledges and a washout section that’s claimed more than one rental car’s exhaust system trying to reach the old CCC camp foundations.
High-clearance vehicles only — stock pickup trucks can make it in dry conditions, but 4WD recommended for the final two miles. Avoid during mud season (March-May) when Vermont’s frost heaves turn the road into a moonscape. Best tackled in fall for foliage or winter with snow cover that smooths the rough sections. No camping allowed, but the views from the ridgeline toward Mount Equinox are worth the beating your suspension takes.
