Steens Mountain Loop
Oregon's overlooked high desert giant.
Steens Mountain Loop Road spirals up Oregon’s massive fault-block mountain, rising from sagebrush desert to alpine meadows over 66 miles of gravel and dirt. The route climbs past Kiger Gorge’s 2,000-foot chasm, crosses wildflower meadows at 9,733-foot Steens Summit, and delivers jaw-dropping views of the Alvord Desert’s playa stretching to the horizon. This is high desert country at its most dramatic, where golden eagles soar above aspen groves and wild horses still run free across the rimrock.
The upper section requires high-clearance vehicles due to rocky stretches and potential snow patches, even in summer. Standard gravel road conditions make this accessible to most overlanders, though weather can turn nasty fast above treeline. July through September offers the most reliable access, with wildflowers peaking in late July. No permits needed for the loop road. Dispersed camping is allowed below 6,000 feet. Bring layers, plenty of water, and prepare for temperature swings from desert heat to alpine cold. This is Oregon’s best-kept secret for big sky country without the crowds.
