This 24-mile route connects several primitive camping areas and fire tower sites, including the historic Castor Creek Lookout Tower where you can climb 80 feet above the canopy for views across central Louisiana’s piney woods. The trail passes through areas burned in controlled fires, showcasing the forest’s natural regeneration cycle that local Choctaw tribes managed for centuries.

Easy to moderate driving suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though sandy sections can be soft after rain and may require momentum driving. The route is best in fall and winter when humidity drops and hunting seasons create more activity on the forest roads. No special permits needed, but dispersed camping requires following Leave No Trace principles. Bring plenty of water and fuel—the nearest services are in Natchitoches, 30 miles away.
