Kisatchie National Forest Forest Road 274 Longleaf Vista Loop

Forest Road 274 loops through the sandstone hills of central Louisiana’s Kisatchie National Forest, climbing to the 400-foot bluffs above Kisatchie Bayou where longleaf pines stretch unbroken to the horizon. The route follows old timber roads established in the 1940s, passing through areas where prescribed burns maintain the open understory that once covered millions of acres across the Gulf Coast. Vista Point offers the best overlook, with sandstone outcrops providing views across the bayou bottoms and rolling hill country.

This is easy-going terrain suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though the deep sand sections can catch drivers off-guard during wet periods. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when humidity drops and wildlife activity peaks. No permits required, and primitive camping is allowed throughout the forest. Fuel and supplies available in Natchitoches, 15 miles south. The payoff is experiencing Louisiana’s most diverse ecosystem and some of the state’s only true hill country terrain.
