Trans-Kalahari Northern Route
The old sand highway across Africa's greatest thirst
Before the tar road made it easy, the Trans-Kalahari was a proper sand slog through country so empty that running out of fuel meant buzzards and bleached bones. This northern variant still follows the old veterinary fence lines and cattle posts from Maun to Ghanzi, then cuts northwest through Bushmanland toward Gobabis — 850 kilometers of deep sand, calcrete, and the kind of space that makes you understand why the San called this the ‘Great Thirst.’ At Deception Pan, you’ll hit the first of three massive salt flats that stretch beyond the horizon like frozen lakes.
Easy to moderate if you know sand driving — drop your tire pressure and keep momentum, but don’t get cocky because the soft patches can swallow a Land Cruiser to the axles. Stock 4WD handles it fine with sand ladders and a compressor. Dry season only (May to October) unless you fancy getting stuck for weeks in clay that turns to concrete. Fuel in Ghanzi and Gobabis, water at every cattle post. This route delivers the true Kalahari experience — endless sky, silence so deep it rings in your ears, and the satisfaction of crossing one of Africa’s great sand seas the hard way.
