Fremont Forest Discovery Trail
Hidden high desert lakes and meadows network
The Fremont Forest Discovery Trail strings together 45 miles of well-maintained forest service roads through the high desert country between Klamath Falls and Lakeview, connecting a chain of hidden lakes and aspen groves most Oregonians never see. The route follows historic cattle drive paths and old CCC roads, with Coleman Lake serving as the scenic midpoint where ponderosa pines give way to high desert sage. Multiple spur roads lead to primitive camping spots and fishing access.
This easy route is perfect for stock high-clearance vehicles and families getting into overlanding. The roads are graded annually and passable from May through October, though early season can be muddy after snowmelt. No permits required and dispersed camping is encouraged throughout the forest. Bring fishing gear for the lakes and expect to see elk, deer, and possibly wild horses. The real draw is the solitude – you’ll travel hours without seeing another rig in one of Oregon’s most overlooked wilderness areas.
