Eldgjá F208 Fire Fissure Highland Traverse

Follow the 40km scar of Iceland's biggest eruption.

Moderate

F208 threads through Eldgjá (Fire Fissure), the 40-kilometer-long volcanic crack that produced Iceland’s largest historical eruption in 934 AD, spewing enough lava to cover Manhattan 250 meters deep. The highland track crosses lunar landscapes of hardened lava fields and follows the dramatic fissure wall where Ófærufoss waterfall plunges into the chasm through what was once a natural stone bridge. River crossings of Tungnaá and its tributaries guard access to this geological monument, with the track continuing north toward the Torfajökull geothermal area.

Moderate to difficult F-road requiring 4WD with good ground clearance for rocky sections and multiple unbridged river crossings. Stock SUVs struggle on the rougher northern sections near the geothermal fields. Essential to check river conditions at Landmannalaugar visitor center before departure — late summer offers most stable crossings. Carry maps, GPS, emergency communication, and extra fuel. The reward is driving through one of Earth’s most dramatic volcanic features where you can literally follow the path of destruction from a thousand-year-old eruption across Iceland’s highland desert.
