Jefferson National Forest Forest Road 708 Clinch Mountain Technical Loop

Forest Road 708 climbs the eastern face of Clinch Mountain from Route 58, ascending through a gauntlet of loose shale and exposed limestone ledges that test both vehicle and driver. The route crests at 4,100 feet before dropping into the Poor Valley on a series of switchbacks carved into the mountain’s spine. Key obstacles include the notorious “Widow Maker” ledge at mile 8.2, where a miscalculation means a 200-foot tumble, and the technical rock garden descent that has claimed more than a few oil pans over the decades.

This is expert-level terrain requiring lockers, skid plates, and solid recovery equipment. Best attempted in dry conditions between June and October — winter ice makes the exposed sections lethal. No permits needed, but inform someone of your plans since cell coverage is nonexistent. Dispersed camping allowed on designated spurs. What you earn is some of the most challenging technical driving in Virginia and panoramic views across the Appalachian Valley that few people ever witness. This isn’t for weekend warriors or stock vehicles.
