Fremont-Winema National Forest — Dead Horse Lake Campground
Dead Horse Lake sits at roughly 7,370 feet on the Gearhart Mountain plateau in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. The USFS campground here is small and primitive — vault toilet, no hookups, no drinking water developed on-site — but the setting is legitimate Oregon high country. Ponderosa and lodgepole pine, a glassy lake that holds trout, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you drove all this way. Capacity is limited; it fills on summer weekends but stays well off the radar compared to the Three Sisters crowds.
Access is via Forest Road 28 and connecting spur roads from Highway 31 — the route is gravel and passable for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions. Snow lingers into June at this elevation. This campground sits well within range of the Drake Peak Lookout Road and the Lakeview-to-Fremont Outback plateau runs — a useful overnight anchor when you’re working that country. No reservations — first come, first served.
