Summer Lake — Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Wildlife Area Headquarters
The Summer Lake Wildlife Area headquarters sits right off Highway 31 at the north end of the basin, where the Warner Valley and Summer Lake playa meet. This is one of Oregon’s most productive wetland complexes — sandhill cranes, white pelicans, tundra swans, and shorebirds pack the marshes during spring and fall migration. For overlanders cutting through on the Alkali Flat Road or the Oregon Outback corridor, the interpretive kiosk and viewpoints here are worth 20 minutes of your time. It’s a stark contrast to the dry playa you just crossed.
No camping at headquarters, but the facility includes pit toilets and a seasonal information board. Water is not reliable here — top off in Paisley or at Summer Lake Store before pushing deeper into the basin. The gravel access roads are generally passable for any vehicle in dry conditions. Spring and fall are the best windows for wildlife viewing.
Desert wetlands, big birds, bigger skies.
