Fort Rock Valley Road — Christmas Valley to Fort Rock State Natural Area via High Desert Basin
A volcano rising alone from Oregon's ancient lake bed.
Twelve thousand years ago this entire basin was Lake Chewaucan. Today it’s one of the emptiest stretches of road in Oregon. The route runs north out of Christmas Valley on county gravel, crosses the cracked alkali flats of the Fort Rock Basin, and rolls up to the base of Fort Rock itself — a 325-foot volcanic tuff ring punched up through the lake sediment like a broken fist. Early settlers found sandals here in the 1930s, dated to over 9,000 years old. You can walk the interior of the crater on a short trail, but the real experience is the drive in: nothing in every direction, a sky that goes on too long, and that single rock on the horizon getting slowly larger for 20 minutes. Side spurs lead to Crack-in-the-Ground, a 70-foot-deep volcanic fissure you can hike through, and the Lost Forest of ponderosa pines growing in sand that by all rights shouldn’t support them.
This is an easy route on dry gravel — suitable for any high-clearance vehicle and passable in a stock truck. The challenge isn’t technical; it’s the remoteness. When the basin clay gets wet it turns to axle-deep glue, so avoid after rain or in early spring. Best season is May through October. Fuel in La Pine or Lakeview — Christmas Valley has a small store but don’t count on gas. No permit required. Dispersed camping on BLM land surrounds the entire basin. Cell service is essentially zero once you leave Christmas Valley.
