Fremont-Winema National Forest — Sandhill Crossing Campground

Established Campground

Sandhill Crossing sits along the Chewaucan River on the eastern flank of Fremont-Winema National Forest, roughly midway between Lakeview and the Summer Lake basin. It’s a primitive USFS campground — vault toilet, fire rings, no hookups — with big ponderosa pine shade and river access a short stumble from your rig. Light use most of the season means you can usually walk in without a reservation. Fire restrictions typically kick in mid-July; check with the Paisley Ranger District before you light anything.

Access is off Highway 31 via Forest Road 28, mostly gravel and passable for high-clearance 2WD rigs. Mud can be an issue through May. Road sign presence is thin — pin it before you leave pavement. No cell signal out here. Season runs roughly May through October depending on snowpack.
