Frenchglen Hotel State Heritage Site

Historic hotel and mercantile serving overlanders tackling southeastern Oregon's remote Steens Mountain and Hart Mountain routes.

This restored 1916 hotel sits in the tiny ranching community of Frenchglen, population around 12, serving as the primary resupply point for anyone heading into Steens Mountain or Hart Mountain country. The mercantile stocks basic groceries, fuel, ice, and camping supplies — essential gear before venturing into the high desert wilderness. The hotel restaurant serves hearty ranch meals during limited hours, and there’s a small general store with surprisingly decent selection given the remote location.

Open seasonally from March through October, with the store operating year-round on reduced hours. The nearest substantial services are 60 miles north in Burns, making this your last reliable stop before heading into some of Oregon’s most remote terrain. Call ahead during shoulder seasons to confirm hours.
