BLM Burns District — Wagontire Mountain Road High Desert Dispersed Camp
This is classic Oregon high desert — big sky, sagebrush flats, and zero crowds. BLM land surrounding Wagontire Mountain along the central Oregon BDR segment offers legal dispersed camping off the main two-track corridors running north toward Burns. Elevation sits around 4,400–4,700 feet, so nights are cold even in summer. No facilities, no signage, no hand-holding — pick a flat spot at least 200 feet off the road and practice Leave No Trace. Fire restrictions apply seasonally; check with BLM Burns District before you light anything.
Access is via dirt and gravel two-tracks off US-395 or connecting BDR routes. High-clearance 2WD handles most of it in dry conditions; after rain, the clay-heavy soils get slick fast. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent out here — plan accordingly. Nearest fuel and supplies are in Burns, roughly 40 miles northeast. Stay limit is 14 days on BLM land.
