Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Loop — Nevada-Oregon High Desert Rim

Oregon's forgotten plateau. Pronghorn. Hot springs. No signal.

Moderate

The Sheldon-Hart Mountain corridor is one of the least-traveled overland routes in the American West, straddling the Oregon-Nevada border across a volcanic plateau that feels genuinely forgotten. The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge loop departs from Denio Junction, Nevada — a place with a gas station and not much else — and climbs through sagebrush flats into alkali lake basins, past Virgin Creek Hot Springs (a roadside soak that’s earned its reputation), and along the Virgin Valley where opalized wood and fire opal have been pulled from the ground for over a century. The road surface is graded gravel and two-track, with creek crossings and washboard sections that shake loose everything not bolted down.

This is a remote self-sufficiency run. Stock 4WD handles the route in dry conditions, but the isolation demands preparation — carry at minimum 5 gallons of water, 10 gallons of spare fuel, and recovery gear. Nearest services after Denio are 80-plus miles away. Cell service is essentially nonexistent throughout. The refuge is open year-round, but spring and fall are the sweet spots — summer heat is punishing and winter snow closes roads without warning. Dispersed camping throughout; no permits required. Watch for pronghorn and bighorn sheep on every bend.
