Gypsum Hills Red Rock Canyon Explorer
Oklahoma's hidden red rock badlands
Oklahoma’s Gypsum Hills hide some of the most dramatic terrain in the southern plains — blood-red mesas, white gypsum cliffs, and slot canyons that rival anything in Utah. This route starts near Freedom and winds through ranch roads and BLM sections, following ancient creek beds carved through Permian red beds. The highlight is navigating Red Rock Canyon where towering selenite formations create a maze of technical challenges requiring precise wheel placement through narrow passages.
Difficult terrain demanding experienced drivers with rock sliders and skid plates. Summer heat is brutal — spring and fall are ideal. Most sections cross private land requiring landowner permission, though some BLM parcels allow access. No official camping, but nearby Roman Nose State Park offers facilities. Carry plenty of water and navigation tools — GPS is essential in this confusing terrain. The payoff is witnessing geology that took 250 million years to create, in country most Oklahomans never see.
