Wabayuma Peak Backcountry Road
Expert technical climb to Mohave County's highest peak
The Wabayuma Peak route hammers through the heart of the Hualapai Mountains, gaining over 3,000 feet through some of Arizona’s gnarliest terrain. Starting from the ghost town of Chloride, this old mining road climbs relentlessly through Joshua tree forests and granite outcrops, passing abandoned mine shafts and rusted equipment from the 1800s silver boom. The final push to the communications towers near Wabayuma’s 8,266-foot summit demands serious rock crawling skills and nerves of steel on cliff-edge switchbacks.
This is expert-only territory—locked differentials and rock sliders are mandatory, not optional. Several sections require spotting, and the loose shale can catch even seasoned crawlers off guard. Winter brings snow above 6,000 feet, making spring through fall the only viable window. Pack recovery gear and expect a full day for the 18-mile round trip. The reward is panoramic views across the Colorado River valley and some of Arizona’s most authentic mining history still scattered across the mountainsides.
