Gloss Mountain State Park Backcountry Circuit

The Gloss Mountains rise like crimson battlements from the Great Plains, their selenite crystal cap rock glinting in prairie sun. This 8-mile backcountry loop weaves between Cathedral Rock and Lone Chimney through technical washes and loose shale slopes that’ll punish street tires. The route follows old oil exploration roads and cattle trails through red-dirt canyons lined with gypsum and selenite deposits—some crystals large enough to see through. Creek crossings get dicey after rain when red clay turns to axle-deep gumbo.

Difficult rating due to loose surfaces, steep grades, and flash flood potential in washes. High-clearance 4WD with aggressive tread essential; lockers recommended for the steeper ascents. Best tackled fall through spring when summer heat isn’t brutal. No permits required but respect private land boundaries. Fairview has fuel and supplies 20 miles south. No cell service in the canyons. This is raw high plains desert that shows you what Oklahoma looked like before the plow—and why the old-timers called it the Great American Desert.
