Gibb River Road — Galvans Gorge to Imintji via King Leopold Ranges Western Approach (Dry Season Classic)
Corrugations, boabs, and the Kimberley gate.
Most people push straight through this 70-kilometre stretch between Galvans Gorge and Imintji without stopping, and they’re missing the point. Galvans Gorge itself is a short scramble off the road — a narrow slot canyon with a waterhole and Aboriginal rock art that’ll reset your brain. From there, the Gibb climbs into the King Leopold Ranges, where the corrugations stack up and the track narrows through a landscape of red rock escarpments and spinifex slopes. The Imintji Community Store is your last fuel and supply point before heading deeper into the Kimberley, and it runs its own hours — don’t show up expecting 7-Eleven service.
This is genuine Kimberley corrugation country. A stock 4WD with high clearance handles it, but you’ll want a minimum of 265-series all-terrain tyres and a well-secured load — loose gear becomes a projectile after the first 20 kilometres. Run it May through September only; the Gibb closes or becomes genuinely dangerous in the wet. Fuel range is critical: carry minimum 200 litres additional. The reward is the classic Kimberley rhythm — red dirt, blue sky, boabs, and gorges that appear out of nowhere.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Land Cruiser 200 or Defender handle this section without a lift?
Yes. Stock high-clearance 4WD is the minimum and handles this section fine in dry season. The corrugations are the bigger punishment — make sure your gear is strapped down and tyre pressures are dropped to around 28–32 psi for the dirt.
What happens if you try this outside dry season — is it passable in October or April?
Don't risk it. The Gibb closes or becomes genuinely impassable during wet season (roughly October to April), and the King Leopold crossings can flood without warning. Check current road conditions with Main Roads WA before you go regardless of the calendar.
Do you need a permit to drive through or camp near Imintji?
Imintji is an Aboriginal Community — you need a permit to enter the community itself. The store there is accessible to travellers, but don't wander beyond it without permission. Dispersed camping outside community land doesn't require a permit, but respect boundaries and leave no trace.
What's the hardest part of this section and what does it actually demand from the driver?
The western ascent through the King Leopold Ranges has rocky, uneven climbs that require low-range and some line choice — nothing technical enough to need lockers, but you need to read the road. The sustained corrugations over 43 miles are honestly more fatiguing than any single obstacle.
How far is the nearest fuel from Galvans Gorge, and is the Imintji store reliable for resupply?
Derby is your last guaranteed fuel before heading east — roughly 120 km west of Galvans Gorge. The Imintji store sometimes carries fuel and basic supplies, but hours and stock are inconsistent. Carry enough fuel for at least 400 km of range and don't count on Imintji to bail you out.
