Ghost Town Road
Iron mining ghost town with technical creek crossing
Ghost Town Road winds through the skeletal remains of Adirondac, a company town that housed 800 iron miners until the Panic of 1893 shuttered the operation overnight. The route follows the original supply road from Blue Mountain Lake, passing foundation stones and rusted machinery scattered through second-growth forest. The real test comes at Mud Pond outlet, where spring runoff turns the creek crossing into a rock-hopping technical challenge that’s claimed more than a few oil pans.
This is moderate 4×4 territory with one genuinely difficult water crossing that requires careful line choice and momentum. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle most of it, but recovery gear and skid plates are smart insurance. Best run May through September when water levels drop and the old logging bridges are passable. No permits required, but camping is restricted to designated spots only. You’re here for the history lesson – seeing how fast the wilderness reclaims what man builds.
