Old Dunstan Trail

Gold rush ghost track across Otago high country.

Difficult

Gold seekers punched the original Dunstan Trail through Central Otago’s ranges in 1862 to reach the Dunstan goldfields from the coast, and the modern track follows much of that same brutal line across the Lammermoor and Rough Ridge ranges. Starting near Middlemarch and finishing near Ranfurly, this route climbs into exposed tussock plateau country at over 1,000 metres, crossing the Taieri River tributaries and pushing through farmland and DOC reserve where the two-rut track narrows to axle-width. The views across the schist-and-tussock rolling country are relentless and the isolation is complete — this is one of the South Island’s less-trafficked overland routes and it shows.

Moderate to difficult depending on conditions; the clay-based tussock surface turns into a greasy nightmare after any rain, and high-clearance 4WD is non-negotiable when it’s wet. Dry summer months — December through March — give the best shot at a clean run. No fuel between start and end, carry your water, and pack recovery gear because help is genuinely far away. Dispersed camping on DOC land is possible in places but check current access with DOC Maniototo. No formal permit required for the route itself, but some sections cross private farmland where courtesy and gate-closing protocol apply.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum vehicle to run Old Dunstan Trail?

Full-time 4WD with high clearance is the floor — a stock Hilux or Pajero will manage, but a lifted rig with proper all-terrain tyres gives you real margin on the loose shingle and creek crossings. Two-wheel drive, crossovers, and soft-roaders have no business here.

When is Old Dunstan Trail actually passable?

December through March is the window. The high country above 3,000ft gets snow from April onwards, and winter conditions make the creek crossings and tussock terrain genuinely dangerous. Spring (October–November) can look clear but the waterways run fast and deep from snowmelt.

Do you need permits or are there fees to drive Old Dunstan Trail?

Parts of the route cross private farmland, so you'll need permission from the relevant landowners before you go — don't assume public access. The DOC sections are free, but check current status with DOC Otago directly, as access arrangements can change.

What's the hardest section and what makes it tough?

The creek crossings are where this trail earns its difficulty rating — water depth and current vary significantly with recent rain, and there's no bailout option mid-crossing if you misread it. The loose shingle climbs above the valley floor are unforgiving too; momentum management matters.

Is there any fuel or water resupply along the route?

None. Middlemarch is your last fuel stop before the trail, and there's no resupply for the full 80km. Water is available from streams but treat it before drinking; dispersed camping is possible along the route, so carry enough for the full 1–2 days plus a buffer.
