Golfito Peninsula Coastal Access Road
Remote banana road to isolated Pacific beaches
This coastal route follows defunct United Fruit Company roads along the Golfito Peninsula, connecting the port town of Golfito to isolated beaches and fishing communities like Playa Zancudo via rough dirt tracks. The road was originally built to transport bananas from remote plantations to the port, and sections still show remnants of old railway grades and loading platforms. Key landmarks include the abandoned banana processing plant at Kilometer 18 and the technical descent to Río Claro, where a questionable wooden bridge tests your nerve and vehicle limits.
This is a difficult route requiring serious 4WD capability, recovery gear, and local knowledge during wet season. Multiple river crossings, steep muddy grades, and washout-prone sections make this challenging even for experienced drivers. Stock up on fuel, water, and supplies in Golfito. Best attempted during dry season (December-April) when river levels drop. The payoff is access to pristine beaches, excellent fishing, and glimpses of Costa Rica’s banana industry history in one of the country’s most remote coastal regions.
