San Vito to Agua Buena Gold Mining Heritage Circuit
Italian immigrant roads through gold mining ghosts
This 65-kilometer loop through the Fila Costeña mountains connects San Vito to the ghost mining settlement of Agua Buena, following roads carved by Italian immigrants in the 1950s and earlier gold prospectors from the 1930s. The route climbs from coffee plantations around San Vito through increasingly remote valleys where rusted mining equipment still dots creek beds and abandoned camps. The technical challenge comes at Río Grande de Térraba crossing — a wide, rocky ford that can run waist-deep during rains, with no bridge for 20 kilometers in either direction.
Moderate difficulty overall but that river crossing bumps it up significantly during wet months (May-November). Stock 4WD handles most of it, but high clearance and recovery points are essential for the water crossing. Fuel up in San Vito — nothing guaranteed until you loop back. Dry season (December-April) offers safest passage, though the route stays passable year-round for experienced drivers. You’ll earn access to some of Costa Rica’s most isolated coffee fincas, spectacular valley views toward the Pacific, and genuine Italian-Tico mountain culture that feels like nowhere else in Central America.
