Talamanca Mountain Coffee Circuit
Coffee farm circuit through cloud forest mountains
This 42-mile mountain circuit climbs from the humid lowlands of Buenos Aires through some of Costa Rica’s highest coffee farms, topping out at 9,200 feet on the flanks of Cerro Kamuk. The route follows old oxcart roads upgraded to handle coffee trucks, with 14% grades that’ll have you in first gear grinding past ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss. The notorious Cerro de la Cruz switchbacks at mile 28 separate the serious drivers from the tourists.
High-clearance vehicle required; 4WD recommended for wet season climbs and stream crossings. Best driven May through November when coffee harvest activity provides some traffic and road maintenance. Fuel up in Buenos Aires — there’s one sketchy pump in San Vito, but nothing guaranteed in the mountains. Pack water and emergency food. What you earn: stunning cloud forest views, authentic coffee farm experiences, and insight into how Costa Rica’s mountain communities actually live and work.
