Saline Valley Road — Death Valley North Entry to Saline Warm Springs and Lippincott Mine
Warm springs, salt flats, and a shelf road with no guardrails.
Saline Valley Road drops you into a world that operates by different rules. The paved highway ends at Big Pine on Highway 168 and within a few miles you’re on washboard dirt descending toward a salt flat valley floor surrounded by the Inyo and Saline Range walls. The springs — Upper Warm Spring and Palm Spring — sit mid-valley and have their own low-key desert community of regulars who’ve been soaking there for decades. Further south, the Lippincott Mine Road is the real test: a narrow, one-lane shelf road dropping 4,000 feet in under four miles with sheer exposure and loose rock. It connects Saline Valley to Racetrack Playa in the park interior, and it earns every star of its reputation.
Skip Lippincott if you’re not running a skid-plated, high-clearance 4WD with a confident driver — the road has eaten trucks and there’s no recovery service anywhere near here. The main Saline Valley Road itself is manageable for most capable rigs in dry conditions, but a single rain turns clay sections impassable and park closures can strand you for days. Fuel is critical: Big Pine to the south exit near Panamint Springs is well over 100 miles of nothing. Carry minimum two gallons of water per person per day — this is Death Valley and the name is literal. Best season is November through March. Summer is genuinely life-threatening.
