Coquihalla Lakes Forest Service Road

Historic railway route to alpine fishing paradise

Difficult

The Coquihalla Lakes FSR climbs steeply from Highway 5A through subalpine terrain to access a chain of glacial lakes nestled below rugged granite peaks. This 28-kilometer route follows sections of the historic Kettle Valley Railway grade, passing through hand-hewn rock tunnels and crossing original wooden trestles that railway crews built in 1912. The final approach to Coquihalla Lakes requires careful navigation around massive granite boulders and seasonal stream crossings that can turn violent during spring snowmelt.

Difficult route requiring experienced 4WD operation and solid ground clearance. Stock vehicles will struggle with the rocky sections and steep grades approaching the lakes. Best accessed July through September when snow clears from the 5,200-foot elevation. No permits required, but bring recovery gear and check road conditions with Merritt Forest District office. Excellent dispersed camping at the lakes, with world-class fishing for brook trout and cutthroat. The railway history and mountain scenery make this a BC classic worth the technical challenge.
