Okanagan Connector Backcountry Route

Peaceful alternative to the Coquihalla Highway

Easy

Running parallel to the busy Coquihalla Highway, this network of forestry and ranch roads offers a peaceful alternative through the rolling grassland and ponderosa pine country that defines BC’s southern interior. The main route follows old cattle drive trails and logging roads from Merritt east toward the Okanagan Valley, passing a dozen hidden lakes where you can camp without seeing another soul. The technical highlight comes at Plateau Creek crossing, where spring runoff has carved a narrow slot that requires precise wheel placement.

Easy to moderate difficulty perfect for stock 4WDs looking to escape highway traffic. The route stays below 4,000 feet, so it’s accessible much of the year except during winter storms. No permits required on the Crown Land sections, but watch for active cattle operations during summer months. Spring and fall offer the best conditions and fewer bugs. Multiple bailout points connect back to Highway 5, making this ideal for beginners wanting to test their backcountry skills. The real draw is the solitude – you’re parallel to one of Canada’s busiest highways but feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.
