Richtersveld 4×4 Route

Africa's last frontier wilderness expedition

Extreme

The Richtersveld sprawls across South Africa’s northwestern frontier where the Orange River carves through granite peaks older than the Himalayas. This UNESCO World Heritage desert wilderness requires self-sufficient overlanding through rocky kloofs, river crossings at Sendelingsdrift, and navigation across trackless terrain where GPS becomes essential. The route passes Kokerboom Forest with its ancient quiver trees and reaches remote campsites like Potjiespram along the Orange River where Namibia lies just across the water.

This Extreme route demands serious 4WD capability, recovery gear, and desert survival skills. High summer (December-February) brings lethal heat; winter offers perfect conditions but cold nights. Carry 5+ days of water, fuel for 400+ kilometers, and spare everything. No cell service, no fuel, no supplies once inside. The reward is accessing Africa’s last true wilderness — a moonscape of succulents, ancient rock art, and absolute solitude that few overlanders ever experience.

Frequently asked questions

What vehicle specs do I need for this extreme route?

You need a high-clearance 4WD with low-range, all-terrain tires, bash plates, and full recovery gear including winch, snatch straps, and shovel. Stock vehicles will not make it through the rocky technical sections and deep sand.

When is the trail actually passable?

April through September is the only safe window - summer temperatures exceed 50°C (122°F) and can be lethal. Winter nights drop below freezing, so pack accordingly.

How do I get permits and what's the cost?

Book through SANParks at least 3 months ahead as spots fill fast. Permits cost around R400 per person per day plus conservation fees, and you must enter/exit through designated gates with specific time slots.

What's the hardest section I should prepare for?

The Helskloof section has Class 4 rock crawling with major wheel lifts and requires spotting. Multiple vehicles have rolled here - it's no joke and demands serious technical driving skills.

How much water and fuel should I carry?

Carry minimum 60 liters of water per person for the full route, plus extra for vehicle cooling. You'll need 200+ liters of fuel as there are no services once you enter the park.
