Copper Canyon Rim Road
Mexico's Grand Canyon rim drive through Copper Canyon
The logging trucks that once hauled timber from these Sierra Madre slopes carved the bones of what’s now Mexico’s most spectacular canyon rim drive. Starting from Creel, this route weaves along the precipice of Barranca del Cobre—deeper than the Grand Canyon—where you’ll cross the Continental Divide three times and navigate sections where the road literally hangs on cliffsides. The standout challenge comes at Mirador La Roca, where a sketchy spur drops to an overlook that’ll make your knees weak.
This is high-clearance country with some technical rock sections, but a capable stock 4WD can handle it if you’re not in a hurry. October through March offers the clearest weather, though winter can bring ice to the higher elevations around 8,000 feet. Pack extra water and food—services are 100+ miles apart, and cell service is a myth up here. What you get is Mexico’s most dramatic scenery and the kind of silence that reminds you why you left the pavement behind.
