Ruta de los Lagos Patagónicos

Patagonia's glacial lakes and endless horizons

Moderate

The Lagos Patagónicos route strings together Argentina’s most stunning glacial lakes via a mix of paved highways and rough backroads that cut deep into the Patagonian wilderness. Starting from San Carlos de Bariloche, you’ll thread between massive lakes like Nahuel Huapi and Viedma, with side spurs to remote gems like Lago del Desierto near El Chaltén. The route’s crown jewel is the section from El Calafate to Lago Argentino’s remote arms, where you can camp within sight of Perito Moreno’s distant ice flows and hear glacial thunder echoing across the water.

Most of this route is moderate difficulty on improved dirt roads, but remote sections demand high-clearance 4WD and self-sufficiency. Weather changes fast in Patagonia—carry gear for four seasons even in summer. Fuel stops are sparse; plan your range carefully between Bariloche, El Calafate, and El Chaltén. November through March offers the most reliable weather, though shoulder seasons can be spectacular with fewer crowds. This is overlanding at its purest: massive landscapes, reliable camping, and the kind of pristine wilderness that makes you remember why you bought a 4WD in the first place.
