Sierra Madre Oriental Copper Canyon Access
Technical access to North America's deepest canyons
This technical mountain route carves through the Sierra Madre Oriental’s pine-covered peaks to reach viewpoints above Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre), a canyon system deeper and larger than the Grand Canyon. The trail starts near Creel and winds through Tarahumara indigenous territory, crossing wooden bridges over deep arroyos and navigating tight switchbacks carved into cliff faces. The route passes through traditional Rarámuri villages where locals still live in cave dwellings carved into canyon walls, ending at dramatic overlooks like Divisadero where you can peer 1,800 meters down into the canyon depths.
This is expert-level terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and aggressive tires. Rock crawling skills essential for boulder fields and creek crossings. Best attempted May through October when snow doesn’t block high passes. Carry recovery gear, extra fuel, and respect for indigenous communities—this isn’t tourist territory. Cell service is non-existent once you leave Creel. The reward is accessing one of North America’s most spectacular geological features through routes that few gringos ever see, camping under Milky Way displays that’ll make you question why you ever lived in cities.
