Copper Canyon Rim Trail

Cliff-hanging route through Mexico's grandest canyons

Difficult

The Rim Trail connects the tourist town of Creel with the remote Tarahumara village of Batopilas via a network of mining roads that cling to the edges of Barranca del Cobre — the Copper Canyon system that’s deeper and more extensive than the Grand Canyon. The route skirts the rims of six major canyons, dropping 6,000 feet from pine forest into subtropical canyon bottoms where the Batopilas River cuts through 300-year-old silver mining country. La Bufa, an abandoned silver mine perched impossibly on a canyon wall, marks the technical midpoint where the road narrows to single-track with no guardrails and 1,000-foot drops.

Difficult rating due to exposure, narrow shelf roads, and weather extremes between rim and canyon floor. Stock high-clearance 4WD sufficient but not recommended — the consequences of mechanical failure are severe. Carry recovery gear, extra fuel, and emergency supplies for 3-4 days. Avoid rainy season entirely (July-September) when roads wash out. Winter brings snow to the rim while canyon bottoms stay warm. Best seasons are October-November and March-April. What you experience is indigenous Mexico largely unchanged for centuries, some of North America’s most dramatic topography, and technical driving that demands complete attention.
