Centennial Valley Red Rock Lakes Road
Montana's high country wilderness corridor.
The gravel backbone of Centennial Valley runs 50 miles from Lima to the Idaho border, bisecting one of Montana’s most intact high-elevation ecosystems. Red Rock Lakes stretch endlessly under the Continental Divide peaks while trumpeter swans drift through marshlands that haven’t changed since Lewis and Clark passed through. The road crosses multiple creek fords and climbs to 7,000 feet, offering unobstructed views of the Centennial Mountains and Henrys Lake Range.
Moderate difficulty with several creek crossings that can be knee-deep during spring runoff. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine from July through September, but 4WD recommended for early season attempts. No services for 50 miles, so pack extra fuel and water. The payoff is pristine camping along Red Rock Creek and access to some of Montana’s most remote backcountry without the crowds.
