Centennial Valley Red Rock Lakes Circuit

Centennial Valley stretches across Montana’s high desert at 6,600 feet, a windswept basin between the Centennial Mountains and Gravelly Range that time forgot. The Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge anchors this 50-mile loop, protecting critical trumpeter swan habitat in shallow lakes surrounded by sagebrush and native grasslands. Historic homestead cabins dot the valley floor, remnants of hardy souls who tried ranching in this unforgiving climate.

Easy to moderate difficulty for stock vehicles with decent clearance, though mud can be treacherous during spring snowmelt. The valley road can turn into a grease pit that’ll swallow axles. Best visited June through October when roads firm up. Bring layers – it can snow any month. Lima, Montana offers the last fuel and supplies before entering the valley. What you get is enormous sky country, wildlife viewing, and the kind of solitude that makes you understand why Montana earned its Big Sky nickname.
