Atoka County Iron Ore Mining Circuit
Iron ore heritage through creek-crossed ridges
The red dirt roads cutting through Atoka County’s pine-covered ridges still show where iron ore mining operations carved into these hills a century ago. This circuit weaves between old quarry sites and forgotten logging camps, crossing Muddy Boggy Creek multiple times while climbing through second-growth timber stands. The route passes the ruins of the old Coalgate furnace site before dropping into the creek bottoms where rusted machinery still sits among the hardwoods.
Moderate difficulty with several creek crossings that can run deep after rain — stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it fine. The trail gets muddy and slick in winter, making spring through fall the best window. No permits needed on these county and private timber roads, but respect posted boundaries. Bring recovery gear for the creek crossings and enjoy a piece of Oklahoma’s industrial heritage that most folks never see.
