Apple River Canyon State Park Technical Bluff Loop
Canyon country in the Prairie State
Apple River Canyon cuts a dramatic gorge through Jo Daviess County’s dolomite bluffs, carved by glacial meltwater 10,000 years ago. This technical loop follows old logging roads along the canyon rim and drops into the valley via Mill Hollow Road, where you’ll ford Apple River three times during normal flow. The route passes the ruins of Millville’s 1800s sawmill and connects to unmarked forest service roads that wind through oak savanna to Tower Rock overlook.
This is technical driving in a tight package — stock 4WD with decent clearance handles it, but low-slung vehicles will scrape on limestone ledges. Water crossings are typically 12-18 inches deep, though spring snowmelt can make them impassable. Best run May through October when creek levels stabilize. No permits required, and primitive camping is available at designated sites along the river. You’ll earn some of Illinois’ most dramatic scenery without leaving the Prairie State.
