Sossusvlei — Deadvlei Salt Pan and Clay Pan Viewpoint

Deadvlei sits inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park, roughly 65 km from Sesriem gate. The clay pan floor is cracked and bone white, the dead acacia trees estimated to be 900 years old — killed when the dunes cut off the water supply, then preserved by the desert’s brutally dry air. The surrounding dunes, including Big Daddy and Elim Dune, top 300 metres. Arrive at dawn before the heat becomes dangerous and the tourist crowd rolls in from Sesriem Camp.

The last 5 km to the pan is soft sand — 4WD required. Park shuttles run when conditions are too soft for private vehicles. Dune 45 sits along the access road and is worth the short stop. Gate opens at sunrise; entry fees apply at Sesriem. Carry extra water — midday temps regularly crack 45°C in summer.
