Camel Thorn Trees Dead Vlei Sossusvlei
Dead Vlei is a white clay pan surrounded by massive red sand dunes, scattered with the blackened skeletons of 900-year-old camel thorn trees. The trees died when the Tsauchab River changed course, leaving them preserved by the dry climate into stark sculptures against orange dune walls. The contrast of white clay, black trees, and red sand creates an otherworldly scene that photographers chase for perfect light.
Access requires 4WD for the final stretch through soft sand to the Sossusvlei parking area, then a 1km walk across the dunes. Dawn and dusk provide the most dramatic lighting. The site sits within Namib-Naukluft National Park — arrive early as midday temperatures soar above 40°C in summer months.
