Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site

Reconstructed earth lodge village where Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea, with trails through ancient Hidatsa sites.

This remarkable site preserves the remains of three Hidatsa and Mandan villages that thrived here for centuries. The visitor center sits above the Missouri River with reconstructed earth lodges and walking trails through the actual village sites where Lewis and Clark wintered in 1804-1805. You can still see circular depressions from hundreds of earth lodges scattered across the prairie.

Located just north of Stanton off Highway 200. The main trail is an easy 1.7-mile loop through the village sites with interpretive signs. Excellent spot to stretch legs and soak up some genuine frontier history before hitting the backcountry trails.
