This state park sits on bluffs overlooking the Missouri River, combining reconstructed military buildings from Custer’s 7th Cavalry with an authentic Mandan earthlodge village. The campground offers 95 sites with electric hookups scattered through cottonwoods and prairie grassland. Summer brings crowds for the interpretive programs, but spring and fall offer quieter visits with excellent wildlife viewing along the river bottom.
Located just south of Mandan, the park makes a solid base camp for exploring the Missouri River corridor and nearby grassland trails. The park road is paved, but some backcountry trails require high-clearance vehicles. Interpretive center closes in winter, though camping remains open year-round with reduced services.
