Cross Ranch State Park

Missouri River bottomland refuge with primitive camping, bison herds, and 15 miles of hiking trails through mixed-grass prairie.

Cross Ranch sits on the west bank of the Missouri River, protecting 6,000 acres of native prairie and woodlands that feel like stepping back into Lewis and Clark’s Dakota Territory. The primitive campground has 12 sites scattered through cottonwood groves, most without hookups but with fire rings and picnic tables. Bison roam the adjacent Nature Conservancy preserve, and you’ll hear their grunts echoing across the river bottoms at dawn.

Access is via gravel county roads that can get muddy after rain. The park stays open year-round but water gets shut off November through March. Spring flooding can close the boat ramp, but the upland trails stay passable. Cell service is spotty down in the river valley.
