Lassen Creek Campground — BLM Surprise Field Office

Lassen Creek Campground is a legitimate BLM developed site sitting in the juniper and sagebrush country east of the High Rock Canyon Wilderness, managed out of the Surprise Field Office. It’s a tight, quiet camp with basic amenities — vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables — and reliable creek access in spring and early summer before the flow drops. Capacity is small. Expect solitude. This is the kind of camp that rewards overlanders who actually read the BLM travel maps rather than relying on cell service to navigate.

Access requires navigating BLM dirt roads north and east of Cedarville, California or west from the Massacre Lake area — routes that demand high-clearance. The road conditions vary significantly by season; snow closes access through most of winter. This is dry country with no services for 40-plus miles in any direction. Pack your own water treatment as a backup. No hookups, no dump station, no cell signal.
