Wedge Overlook and San Rafael Swell Backcountry — Mexican Mountain Road
Swell country river road with zero crowds.
The Mexican Mountain Road runs roughly 20 miles one-way along the San Rafael River corridor from the mouth near I-70’s San Rafael Bridge rest area south through cottonwood-lined river bottoms, slickrock benches, and eroded Entrada sandstone formations to the base of Mexican Mountain itself. The road is flat and easy near the river, then turns technical as you climb onto the mesa system — loose ledge rock, shelf road with no guardrails, and a few moves that require careful tire placement. The payoff is consistent: canyon wrens in the walls, zero crowds, and a sense that the Colorado Plateau is yours alone for a few hours.
This is a high-clearance route on the easier end of technical — a stock Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner on all-terrains handles it fine in dry conditions. The San Rafael River corridor is impassable when wet; the clay turns to axle-deep grease with zero traction. Run it April through June or September through November. Nearest fuel is Green River or Castle Dale. Water from the river must be filtered. No permit required. BLM manages the area and dispersed camping is wide open along the corridor. Cell service is nonexistent once you leave the interstate corridor — budget accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner or Wrangler run this without any mods?
Yes, a stock 4WD high-clearance vehicle handles this trail fine under normal conditions. Aired-down tires help on the rocky sections, but no lift or skid plates are required.
When is this trail actually passable — and what closes it?
April–June and September–November are the sweet spots. Summer flash floods can make the river bottom impassable with little warning, and winter mud on the mesa sections turns into a vehicle-swallowing mess.
Do I need a permit to drive or camp out here?
No permit required — this is BLM land managed by the Price Field Office. Dispersed camping is allowed; follow Leave No Trace and don't camp within 200 feet of the river or any water source.
What's the gnarliest section and what should I actually expect?
The rocky river-bottom stretches near Mexican Mountain are the most technical — loose rock, shelf road exposure, and a few water crossings that vary by season. Nothing extreme, but it demands attention and confident wheel placement.
Is there any water I can rely on along the route, and how far is the nearest gas?
The San Rafael River runs along parts of the route but treat any water before drinking — giardia is real out here. Green River, UT is your last fuel stop, roughly 30 miles away, so top off before you head in.
