Sierra de la Laguna Ridge Trail
Baja's highest technical mountain traverse
The Sierra de la Laguna Ridge Trail cuts through the highest mountains of Baja California Sur, where ancient granite peaks rise above 7,000 feet and trap Pacific moisture to create isolated cloud forests. This technical route follows old mining roads and rancher tracks through the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, passing Picacho de la Laguna at 7,090 feet—the peninsula’s highest point. Water is scarce but present at Cañón de la Zorra and seasonal pools near El Salto waterfall during wet years.
This is a serious backcountry commitment requiring high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and multiple days of food and water. Rocky granite slabs, steep grades over 20%, and loose boulder fields demand attention. Best tackled November through March when temperatures drop and occasional rains fill water sources. Permits required through the reserve office in La Paz. You’ll earn views across both coasts of Baja and camp among palm oases that shouldn’t exist in this desert peninsula.
