Downton Lake Recreation Site — Carpenter Lake Road
Downton Lake Recreation Site sits at the end of a rough FSR above Carpenter Lake, tucked into the mountains northwest of Gold Bridge. The lake is cold, clear, and surrounded by big peaks — it feels genuinely remote even though it’s reachable by high-clearance 4WD. Small gravel sites, a pit toilet, and a boat launch round it out. Fire rings are present but check current fire restrictions with BC Wildfire before you light anything. Light use compared to Spruce Lake; you may have the whole place to yourself on a weekday.
Access is via the Downton FSR off the Carpenter Lake Road — expect washboard and some rocky sections. High-clearance 4WD recommended, especially after rain. No fee, no reservation. Season runs roughly June through October depending on snowpack. No cell service. Water from the lake — treat it.
