Stave Lake West Side Road
Hidden lakeside camping near Vancouver
The West Side Road hugs Stave Lake’s remote western shoreline, winding through towering old-growth cedar and Douglas fir that the loggers somehow missed. This BC Hydro service road becomes increasingly rough as you head north, with washouts, loose rock, and tight switchbacks that keep things interesting. The highlight is reaching the north end where Alouette Creek feeds into the lake — a pristine spot that feels like you’re the first person to discover it.
Stock 4WD handles most of it fine, though high clearance helps with the rougher northern sections. Spring runoff can make creek crossings sketchy until mid-summer. No permits needed, but respect the active logging — weekends are your best bet. Cell service dies after the first few kilometers, so bring maps and emergency communication. The real reward is finding those hidden camping spots along the lakeshore, watching the mist roll off the water at dawn while the rest of the Lower Mainland fights traffic.
