Nellis Dunes Recreation Area
Pure sandbox freedom near Vegas
Military F-16s scream overhead while you carve fresh lines through pristine Mojave sand at Nellis Dunes, a Bureau of Land Management playground just 45 minutes northeast of Vegas. This 10,000-acre sand bowl offers everything from gentle rolling hills for beginners to massive 200-foot dunes that’ll test your climbing skills. The contrast between Air Force training flights and silent desert makes for a surreal riding experience.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on where you venture, but the sand will humble any vehicle without proper technique. Stock high-clearance 4WD can handle the perimeter areas, but aired-down tires are mandatory for serious dune running. Open year-round, but summer temps hit 115°F — stick to fall through spring. No permits needed, plenty of dispersed camping, and close enough to Vegas for fuel runs. Pure sandbox freedom without the crowds of Glamis.
